Supervisory Health Technician

The primary purpose of the Palo Alto, CA position is to supervise a team of employees performing work at the GS-05/06 level. The incumbent provides guidance and technical direction necessary for accomplishing the work of the team. Ensures that all team members know their assignments and responsibilities, and monitors to see work is completed accurately and on time. The primary purpose of the Las Vegas, NV position is to directly supervise Health Technicians in the Lab Phlebotomy department. The supervisor is responsible for ensuring all safety procedures and accrediting/regulatory requirements are met. The impact of this position is delivering high-quality specimen collection with excellent customer service to the Laboratory's customers. The incumbent is under the administrative supervision of the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service Manager. The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Collaborates with Assistant Chief with implementation and evaluation of annual competencies, performance appraisals, and disciplinary actions done with the assistance of the Assistant Chief Nurse. Manages scheduling, vacation requests, and sick leave coverage of all Float Pool Staff. Creation and management of unit specific SOPs, standard work, daily procedures, etc. Identifies training and in-service needs and implements action plan. Demonstrate competency in performing BLS. Recognizes, reports, and responds appropriately to unusual patient behavior, i.e., hostile, abusive, violent and or changes in patient's conditions. Recognizes any communication by patient with depressed, suicidal, or homicidal behaviors; remains with patient and reports immediately to Charge Nurse or Physician. Provides and reinforces patient education, as appropriate. Collaborates with various unit Nurse Managers on practice, education, daily practices for float pool staff when assigned to their unit. Recognizes the need for, and assists with emergency measures, including CPR. Takes appropriate action in response to patient emergency situations. Individual initiates e-team and codes when indicated. Direct report for all Float Pool Health Technicians and Nursing Assistants. Oversees all supervisor duties of all float health technicians and nursing assistants. Selection and onboarding of new health technicians and nursing assistants. Work Schedule:

Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-07 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
Managing and direct report of all Float Pool Health Technicians and Nursing Assistants. Creating and managing unit specific SOPs, standard work, daily procedures, etc. Collecting and doing data analysis regarding the usage of float pool staff, overtime, and other key performance indicators. Reviewing and collaborating with the Assistant Chief with implementation and evaluation of annual competencies, performance appraisals, and disciplinary actions done with the assistance of the Assistant Chief Nurse. Perform and use patient care techniques as a Health Technician. Ability to identify training and in-service needs and implements action plan. OR, Education:
Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level, you must have one full year of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. OR, Combination:
Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-08. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate-level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position. Physical Requirements:
Good hearing and visual acuity are required. The work involves standing long hours, walking, bending, and reaching on a routine basis. The work requires the incumbent to be mobile throughout the Medical Center as needed, involving standing, walking, bending, pushing, and lifting (moderate to heavy). The incumbent must be capable of prolonged standing/walking, and be physically capable of pushing equipment, and escorting patients that may be in wheelchairs and/or gurneys.
