Staff Nurse (RN-Operating Room, Open Heart Nurse)
The Operating room nurse is a direct care provider whose scope of practice involves providing nursing care for patients undergoing surgery and identified procedures at Operating Room Service. a. Strict adherence to sterile technique, infection control and safety practices. b. Functions as an integral member of the surgical team. Interfacing with patients, surgeons, and anesthesia staff in the surgical setting. c. I Implement the pre-operative plan of care demonstrating knowledge of the responsibilities of the RN pre operatively, intra-operatively and post-operatively. d. Scrubs and circulates surgical procedures independently. e. Works in partnership with the health care team in implementing standards of care during the operative and immediate post-operative phase in accordance with the purpose, philosophy and objectives of nursing, while being a positive team player. f. Supervise care given and services rendered in the OR by other professional and non-professional staff. g. Responsible for maintenance, care and use of equipment used, applying principles of asepsis, therapeutic and technical knowledge to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff. h. Assists in orientation of rotating surgical and anesthesia residents, and other nursing staff. i. Documents nursing interventions incorporating use of Deliverex, CPRS and GUI. j. Provides patient and family teaching. k. Participates in in-services, journal club presentations and Total Quality Improvement (TQI) activities. l. The Incumbent completes OR orientation and is competent to cover emergency call assignments within one year of hire. m. Promotes continuity of care by collaborating with the interdisciplinary health team. n. All other duties as assigned. Work Schedule:

In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, and sitting. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must-complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment.
