Role
The purpose of the Tesla Materials & Processes Engineering organization is to facilitate the Tesla mission of accelerating the world to sustainable transportation via identification, development and insertion of advanced materials and processes while supporting other Tesla Engineering functions with materials & processes expertise.
The Tesla Materials Engineering team is seeking a Welding specialist to lead the identification, development and implementation of new joining methods for Tesla's current and future product lines. Primary function will be support Vehicle Design Engineering, which includes Body, Chassis, Closures and Power Train, but support to other areas such as Power Train and Battery will also be needed. Interfacing with other functions, organizations and disciplines, such as Quality, Purchasing, Supplier Industrialization, Manufacturing, etc. will also be required.
Knowledge and experience in relevant welding processes, which include Gas Metal Arc Welding (aka MIG or GMAW), Resistance Spot Welding, Laser Welding and Friction Stir Welding in both Aluminum and Steel Alloys. An ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience with joining method selection based on structural requirements, materials, and cost. Additionally, definition of test matrices to establish mechanical design values, creation of process specifications to ensure production processes meet engineering design intent, production issue trouble shooting and failure analysis. Candidate must have a strong understanding of weld process to joint metallurgy and performance relationships.
Responsibilities
Assist design engineering in identification and selection of welding processes.
Develop new welding processes to meet design needs current processes are incapable of.
Define and execute test programs for establishing design values for given processes and materials.
Create/maintain welding process specifications.
Provide consultation to design engineering and manufacturing as necessary.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering is preferred. Degrees in other engineering disciplines, such as Materials or Mechanical Engineering, or sufficient relevant experience will also be considered. Advanced degrees, Masters or PhD, with relevant research are preferred or equivalent required.
A senior engineer, with 5
years of relevant experience is desired, but exceptional talent with all experiences levels will be considered.
Automotive experience is not a pre-requisite. Experience in the specific technical fields described previously is the requirement, regardless of what sector or industry that experience was obtained.
